This Samyang lens has significant power to bring a sharp subject forward from a smooth background, presenting three-dimensional images, at quite a few apertures. This f/1.4 lens is most appropriate for use in dimly lit conditions and for capturing shots when a limited depth-of-field is required.

The build quality is very good, even considering Samyang are comparatively new to the lens market, and whenever you hold it in your hand the Samyang 85mm f/1.4 lens feels solid and of a high quality specification.

The focusing ring is generously wide with a ridged, rubberized grip band. Seeing as this is a manual focus only lens you will find there's a distance scale that extends from the closest distance of 1m to infinity (there isn't any depth of field scale). The lens is supplied with an easily removed petal shaped lens hood, lens caps plus a soft lens bag, and the filter size is 72mm.

Focusing is conducted internally so the Samyang 85mm f/1.4 ED AS UMC won't change length and the filter thread will not rotate, wonderful news for filter uses.
Chromatic aberrations, in most cases noticed as purple or blue fringes are actually remarkably well managed with this lens.

One of several reasons to spend money on a fast lens is to isolate the subject from the background, and in most cases this can be very tricky to do with an ultra wide lens. Samyang know this and have now used an iris diaphragm using 8 rounded blades for a pleasant rendering from the out-of-focus highlights.
